Bringing the Love of Math to 5th Graders

There are many cool things about John Hay, but one on one tutoring is one of the coolest! There are, as of mid-October, over 548 students at John Hay. Because of donations from this even, we are able to hire tutors for every grade that can help students one on one, which can make all the difference in the world for a lot of kids.

Today, we would like to share with you how this event helps provide kids with math tutors, even though she might be a bit camera shy, you will see Lynn in action every day at John Hay Elementary changing children’s perspectives on math.

Lynn Howard, tutors math to 5^th graders, and loves every minute of it. She recalls her ‘Ah ha’ moment a few years ago when she had a group of 5 5^th graders needing additional support. In the beginning of the year, these kids were struggling with math, and within 6 months, every single one of them were AT standard or ABOVE!!! Not only was Lynn literally dancing in the streets, but she realized there was no way these kids could have achieved what they did without the success extra tutoring brings. During Lynn’s tutoring sessions, she is able to use math games, real life math scenarios like banking, and many other methods as tools for learning. These tools are what enable her to tap into the math brains in all her students. Lynn realizes she wouldn’t be able to spend that time if she had a class of 25+ kids.

Another one of Lynn’s students spent one of her school days off at home practicing math by choice, instead of doing what most kids would be doing on a day off- playing. This student intrinsically took what she had learned from her math instruction and was inspired enough to spend a good portion of her day applying what she had learned to practice at home. She was motivated to do more!

These stories only confirm for Lynn that her work is paying off in spades. YOUR donations enable John Hay to hire people like Lynn to help students be successful. It is John Hay’s goal, as well as Lynn Howard’s, to get each and every 5^th grader to the point of feeling successful, confident, and prepared for middle school curriculum. With tutors for every grade level, every student in need of additional support is given the chance to succeed.
